Be Ready with These Documents When Buying a Used Lifted Diesel Truck
If you’re in the market for a used truck, you have something else to worry about apart from the vehicle’s condition. After perusing the lineup of used lifted diesel trucks for sale and checking off your inspection checklist, you need to complete some paperwork to make your purchase official.
Whether you’re buying from a private party or a dealer, these documents are necessary to legally transfer the property from the previous owner’s name to yours. The dealer usually handles the paperwork. But if you’re buying from a private party, you and the seller have to go to the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or Secretary of State to finalize the transaction.
Paperwork for the Truck
These three documents are provided by the seller. It pays to be aware of what to look for in the following papers to ensure that the vehicle is in top shape.
-
Title
The most basic document for any secondhand car sale is the title. It should have the date of the sale, the signature of the buyer and seller, and the mileage of the truck. Another thing to check for in the title is a salvage status. This means the vehicle has underwent major refurbishing due to damage.
Some states won’t accept a damaged title, so it should be in clear, good condition. You may also need an odometer disclosure statement and a notarization, depending on the state you live in.
-
Bill of Sale
The bill of sale or buyer’s order lists all the details of the transaction and the vehicle. Some pertinent information includes the truck’s manufacture, make and model, Vehicle Identification Number or VIN, sales price, and taxes.
-
Buyers Guide
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) obligates dealers to provide a Buyers Guide for every used car they have for sale. This document tells you about the electrical and mechanical issues of the car. Apart from that, the Guide says if the vehicle has warranty or not, as well as the percentage of the repair expenses covered.
The dealer is required to give you the Buyers Guide upon purchase.
-
Personal Documents
If you’re buying from a subprime auto lender, you need to present documents to prove that you’re capable of paying the loan. Proof of income, proof of residency, proof of a phone, driver’s license, certificate of insurance, and a list of references are some of the common documents they require.
States also require different paperwork for used car sales. Check your local DMV online or in person to make sure you’ve got everything you need to register the vehicle under your name and get it legally on the road.
Lastly, purchase only from reputable sellers. This ensures the condition of the vehicle as well as the efficiency of the transaction. Dependable dealers have their paperwork organized, so you’ll know that the vehicle is handled with care.
